The New Symbol of the Republican Party

The chicken sandwich: the new symbol of Conservatism and heterosexual monogamy.

This past week I have wondered if the United States has lost its mind since I’ve left.  I cannot count how many times my friends here have told me that the United States wins the gold for the the craziest country in the world.  If only insanity was an Olympic event…

Here’s a quick review of the Chick-fil-A controversy for those who have been living in a cave for the past week:  Chick-fil-A president Dan Cathy recently announced he supported the “biblical definition of marriage” and mentioned nation’s support of the homosexual alternative is “prideful” and “arrogant” and invites “God’s judgement.”  I can only assume his biblical definition of marriage is “one man, one woman,” as he doesn’t seem to be practicing Solomon’s love for concubines and hopefully not forcing his children into arranged marriages.

In response to the media outcry and hard-left political calls to kick Chick-fil-A chains out of town, Mike Huckabee asked all those in favor of Dan Cathy’s principles to support his restaurant.  And according to last Wednesday’s turn out, they did.  One friend posted on Twitter, “Boycott gone wrong,” accompanied by an image on Instagram of a line wrapping around his local Chick-fil-A.  Other friends on Facebook reported waiting in line for half an hour.  That’s some real perseverance to demonstrate one’s disapproval (or as most media outlets call it, “hate”) of gay marriage.

While almost everyone has an opinion on Chick-fil-A, it seems the only Conservative who won’t talk about it is Mitt Romney.  Well played, Mittens.  As a religious business man, I can imagine it’s tough not to take the bait.  However, I must admit I am proud of him.  Everyone wants to know how the potential voice of the country would respond, but maintaining presidential self-control, he refuses to weigh in and “tell people what to think.”

However, it seems that the chicken sandwich has much to offer as a symbol regarding one’s thoughts on homosexuality, religion, and capitalism.  Whether we think it’s bogus or not, the the Chick-fil-A spicy chicken sandwich has become quite… saucy.
